Marketplace onboarding
Before you open your first marketplace account
A practical checklist for preparing your products, account information and everyday operations before you start selling on a marketplace.

Opening a marketplace account is a useful first step. A little preparation before registration can make the work that follows much clearer.
Think beyond the sign-up form. Your product information, pricing, inventory and order process will all need attention once the account is active. This checklist brings those decisions together so you can start with a practical plan.
Start with one clear goal
Decide what you want the first stage of online selling to achieve. You might be introducing an existing product range, testing a smaller selection or building the online presence of a new brand.
Choose a manageable starting catalogue. A smaller group of well-prepared products is often easier to maintain than a large catalogue with missing information. Write down who will look after listings, inventory, customer queries and dispatch.
Check the platform’s current requirements
Each marketplace has its own onboarding process, category conditions and document requirements. Review the current seller information for the platform you are considering before preparing an application.
Keep your business and contact details consistent across the information you submit. If something is unclear, resolve the question before moving to the next step. Registration and category approval depend on the platform’s review; a completed application is not a guarantee of approval.
Prepare your product information
Gather the information a customer needs to understand what they are buying. Keep a simple source sheet for every product so the team can find and update details consistently.
- A clear product name and an accurate description
- Relevant dimensions, materials, variants and pack quantities
- Product identifiers and category details requested by the platform
- Clear photographs that represent the actual product
- Current stock information and an agreed process for updating it
Avoid copying information from a similar product. Small differences matter, and inaccurate details can create extra questions or returns later.
Plan what happens after an order arrives
Agree who checks new orders, prepares the parcel and coordinates dispatch. Keep the packing materials and product stock organised, and decide how inventory changes will be recorded.
It also helps to set a regular time to check account notifications. Requests for information, listing issues and account-health messages are easier to manage when somebody is responsible for reviewing them.
Build a routine for the first month
Once the account is active, review the basics regularly. Are the right products visible? Is the information accurate? Does stock match what is available? Are orders and messages being handled as expected?
Record issues as they arise, decide the next action and keep track of what has been completed. The goal is a reliable routine that your team can maintain.
Get support where it is useful
You do not have to organise every part of the process at once. Start with the work that matters most for your current stage and agree a clear scope for any support you bring in.
